The World’s Only “Shantyoke” Takes Over Sláinte Pub – Dec. 18 (Free)
Looking for a holiday event that isn’t another round of Mariah Carey and lukewarm cheer? Shipwrecked Shanty is closing out the year with the world’s only officially titled “Shantyoke” — yes, karaoke, but make it nautical, louder, and somehow even cheaper than therapy.
This “yo-ho-ho, not HO-HO-HO” night invites you to trade the carols for sea shanties and warm your voice with a whiskey or hot toddy. And in case you’d like scientific backing for this questionable life choice: as Bay Area legend Linda Ronstadt likes to point out, studies show that when people sing together, their heart rates sync up. Consider this your seasonal mental health tune-up.
A fair warning: seating is limited, and according to ancient maritime lore (and the band), the Kraken and Krampus have a holiday pact to toss latecomers into the dinghy. Translation: arrive early unless you enjoy humiliation by mythological creatures.
Admission is free — your favorite “F” word here at Funcheap — though the band wouldn’t mind a little “holiday turkey” to keep Tiny Tim fed.
Want to practice beforehand? Lyrics and music links are available at the event link provided, so you can come prepared to bellow like a proper sailor.
One night only. Dec. 18. Sláinte Pub in Oakland. Final shanty of the year. Bring your voice and your questionable life choices.
