India is home to folk and tribal artists from rich and varied cultural backgrounds. Much of what the public learns about these communities – who often exist on the margins of mainstream society – is through their representation in a museum. Join us for a film screening and illustrated talk with editor and filmmaker Arun Wolf of Tara Books, an independent publisher based in Chennai, India. Wolf will present his film Between Memory and Museum, which explores the idea of a museum from the perspective of communities historically regarded as anthropological subjects.

In the film, folk and tribal artists reflect on how museums create, preserve and disseminate knowledge, as well as their own ways of remembering and passing on traditions. They also tackle a pressing question: Who has the power to put whom in a museum?

For the past 20 years folk and tribal artists from across India have applied traditional art techniques to create the breathtaking illustrated books for children and adults published by Tara Books. It has received numerous international accolades for its diverse publications, which offer readers unusual and rare voices in art and literature.
