Heron Watch at Stow Lake | Golden Gate Park

Observe the Magnificent Great Blue Herons and Their Chicks at Stow Lake Nine Saturdays During the Spring Nesting Season in April, May and June.

2020 Season – 10 am to 1 pm: April 11, 18, 25, May 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 and June 6, 13

Free Program – Interns and volunteers, using spotting scopes, will show the herons and chicks and explain their behavior. Observation deck is open from 10 am to 1 pm

Naturalist-led Walk (Adults: $10, young adults and children free.) – To observe chicks and other nesting birds from various spots around the Lake and Strawberry Island. Terrain is mostly flat. 10:15 am-12:15 pm – meet at observation site.

The Great Blue Herons at Stow Lake have three new baby chicks for the public to observe through spotting scopes, brought to you by San Francisco Nature Education.

Staffed by Nancy DeStefanis, Executive Director and volunteers, they will be answering questions about the late nest and the chicks that hatched around June 25, 2014.

They are located around the corner from the Stow Lake Boathouse on the grass. Facing the water at the Boathouse, walk or drive to the left. You will see SF Nature volunteers and signs just around the corner.
