Event Details

In this multimedia presentation, Dr. Gloria Arjona addresses the life and work of Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo, from the artist’s own perspective. Dressed in the Tehuana costume popularized by Frida Kahlo, Dr. Arjona will read fragments of Frida’s diary and letters, relevant to the most important moments of her life, like the traffic accident she had at a young age, that condemned her to live with pain all her life, as well as her marriage to worldwide known Mexican muralist, Diego Rivera. During her presentation, Dr. Arjona will sing some of the traditional songs Frida frequently quoted in her paintings, and those associated to her as a result of Julie Taymor’s film. Frida. Dr. Arjona will also include slides of Frida’s self-portraits, and photographs of her and other historical characters, taken by famous photographers (e.g. Tina Modotti, Edward Weston, Nickolas Muray, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, and Frida’s own father, Wilhelm Kahlo.)
