> EVENT UPDATE: This event is no longer taking place.

Come out for a night of fun and creativity as the Oakland Asian Cultural Center hosts First Fridays, an evening of art, performance, workshops and games every first Friday of the month.

The OACC builds vibrant communities through Asian and Pacific Islander American (APIA) arts and culture programs that foster intergenerational and cross-cultural dialogue, cultural identity, collaborations, and social justice.

OACC is located in Oakland Chinatown in the Pacific Renaissance Plaza (near Peony Restaurant). It is 3 blocks from the 12th Street / City Center BART Station. In addition to metered street parking, there is a $2/evening parking lot below for those who enter after 5 pm on weeknights.

OACC will host our sixth First Friday gathering on March 4th. Come out for a night of fun and creativity.

There will be workshops, an art exhibition, and fun activities like tangrams, origami, and more.

Minnie Phan Artist Talk & Exhibit Reception:
Minnie Phan’s ‘Kith and Kin’ explores the unique stories that craft culture and heritage, while exposing the difficulties of existing in a multicultural society. The exhibit includes paintings from Minnie Phan’s book ‘They Call Us Viet Kieu’ as well as the debut of a new body of work.

Wam Jam:
Come join us for a mini writing workshop led by Sea-Tygress Ue! Whether you’re into novels, poetry, spoken word, or something in between, all ages welcome! We will wrap up with a blitz writing / open mic session.

API Women Behind the Scenes Panel Discussion:
Asian women who work behind-the-scene in the film and media industry come together to discuss their work, the challenges they face, and their inspiration to beat the odds. Panelists include: Documentary filmmaker and scholar Anita Chang, Center for Asian American Media content manager, Momo Chang, independent filmmaker and Oakland Home Grown Documentary Series curator, Jennifer Crystal Chien, and NYC-based independent filmmaker, Kim Spurlock.

Impact Bay Area Self-Defense Workshop:
This short class will provide valuable tools for staying safe, including a simple and effective physical strike technique. This one-hour introduction to Impact Bay Area’s unique self-defense style will give students a great idea of what to expect in their 20+ hour Adult Basics classes, while imparting great basic skills to keep people safer and more confident in the world.

ASPIRE – Flip the Script Exhibit Reception:
Through community-based art projects, Define Undocumented invites you to explore the power of art-in-activism. By navigating difficult topics around identity, history, and yearning for home, their art explores the complexity and diversity in the community to paint a fuller picture of experiences.
