“Sunday Assembly” Silicon Valley Community Gathering | Mountain View

Live Better, Help Often, Wonder More” is the motto for Sunday Assembly Silicon Valley (SASV), an international community movement that celebrates life. The radically inclusive SASV is a secular and service nonprofit that celebrates life, welcomes all people and supports everyone fulfilling their potential.

It aims to help people “live better” with inspiring, thought-provoking and practical ideas that help people lead the lives they want; “help often” by encouraging community action and lives of purpose; and, “wonder more” with talks, singing as one, readings and games to connect with each other and world. Most of all, have fun, be nice and join in.

Monthly meetings feature live pop music, TED-style talks, inspirational stories, socializing over coffee and cake and activities for children. SASV focuses on purpose and action. It supports local nonprofits through hands-on help and donations. The organization offers “smoups,” small activity groups that gather around member interests, including outdoor activities, book reading, crafts, self-improvement and beer tasting. On site parking is free.

Start your year off with a fun potluck and a global thinker at January’s Sunday Assembly. Author and TED Talk veteran Robert Wright speaks on “The Meaning of Evil.” He recasts the concept of evil from an ancient religious definition into a secular interpretation. He will explore the possibility of a spiritual world view that is compatible with and deeply informed by science as he proposes ways to counter evil in the modern scientific age.

Wright has written the best-sellers “Nonzero,” “The Moral Animal” and “The Evolution of God,” which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. In 2009, Wright was named by Foreign Policy Magazine as one of the top 100 global thinkers. He has been published in the Atlantic Monthly, the New Yorker, the New York Times Magazine, and the Washington Post.

The live band will lead us in songs about good and evil. Childcare and activities will be provided.

The January potluck gives you another chance to eat lunch and socialize. Bring a tasty potluck dish and stay for a board game after the assembly.

Disabled parking is on site. Others may park for free on most neighborhood streets or at the San Jose State University garage at San Fernando and 10th Street for $5.
