Event Details

Friday, January 28, 2011 at 11:59pm is the ending of the “Yahoo Bus Stop Derby” where 20 different San Francisco neighborhoods battle it out on giant sized video screens at muni bus shelters to see which neighborhood will win a free block party and concert by OK Go. Find a Bus Stop Derby location near you

Current Standings:
1) North Beach – 336,375 Points
2) Tenderloin – 307,825 Points
3) Mission – 284,900 Points
….
20) Noe Valley – 36,525 Points – last place 🙁

20 Muni bus shelters in San Francisco are getting a high tech makeover for two months as part of a the Yahoo Bus Stop Derby – a giant neighborhood vs. neighborhood challenge that ends with a huge free concert put on by Yahoo.

Plus each bus shelter has Free Wifi

Muni running late? Who cares – play a game.
Resembling giant iPhones (but 20x the size), these 72″ touch screens have been installed at bus stops all over San Francisco so that bored commuters waiting for the bus can play games and earn points for their neighborhood.  Users choose a neighborhood to represent and play one of four short video games either solo or live head-to-head against other bus shelters.

The Games
So what can you play on these giant touch screens? Games include Snap -Happy (a 3D puzzle game), Chatter Scatter (see how quickly you can type an instant message), Sport-a-pult (a silly sports trivia game that involves catapults) and Incoming! (a tetris-like game based on sorting your email inbox).

None of these games are terribly exciting or challenging, but when muni is running late should prove to be a welcome distraction nonetheless.

We’ve also been told there should be free wifi at these bus shelters (at least during the daytime and early evening hours) but we’ll confirm.

Winning Neighborhood Gets a Free Concert by OK Go
At the end of the two-month derby (which ends January 28, 2011) the neighborhood with the most points earns a free concert with OK Go at a local venue. As of December 5th, The Tenderloin is in first place, with North Beach and The Mission close behind. Sadly, Noe Valley and Hayes Valley are tied for last place
