Youth Culture is an all-encompassing label used to define the many personalities of adolescence in the Bay Area today. However, this broad term undermines the diversity of experience and identity that teens and young adults confront daily. This exhibition explores and celebrates what makes Bay Area youth unique in their gender and sexual identities, self images, friendships and lifestyles. $1.25 has been curated to empower young artists no matter what route they travel.

Opening Reception: Saturday, May 4, 2019, 4:00 – 6:00 PM
Gallery Hours: Tuesday – Saturday, 12:00 – 6:00 PM

An open call was put out this past February inviting teens and young Bay Area Artists to submit new visual work about youth culture for a juried exhibition. Curated by the Youth Advisory Board – a team of curators ages 16-18 who are mentored by SoEx Artists in Education Coordinator and Curatorial Council Member Kimberly Acebo Arteche – the exhibition seeks to center the voices of youth who have long been regarded as a peripheral footnote in the art world.

Open to Youth and Young Artists living in San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, Napa, Marin, and Sonoma Counties, the work selected for this exhibition exemplifies Southern Exposure’s mission and commitment to supporting new, innovative, risk-taking contemporary visual art practices.
