Event Details

The San Mateo County History Museum will present Victorian Days at the Old Courthouse on Sunday, August 21 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.  On this special free admission day, discover what life was like during the 1800s through children’s crafts and a fashion show.  Because it was considered bad manners to go outside without a hat, as a craft activity, kids will design their own head gear to wear.  As families often made their own toys, visitors will create clothespin dolls to take home.  A local spin on the fun will be to create “Cowboy Duke Marionettes.”   The “Cowboy” was the Duke of Manchester as described by local author Gertrude Atherton in her book, Adventure of a Novelist.

At 1:30, there will be a Victorian Fashion Show.  The audience will learn about fashion trends from the 1800s.  While viewing the clothing, volunteer models will tell stories about local residents of that period.

In addition to these activities, families will be invited to participate in a museum scavenger hunt that will highlight Victorian items on display.

Victorian Days at the Old Courthouse is an annual event at the History Museum and is sponsored by Cypress Lawn Heritage Foundation.
