2014 America Recycles Day & Free Compost | East Bay

For anyone who has ever wondered what happens to trash and recyclables after they leave the curb, the America Recycles Day celebration at the Waste Management Davis Street Resource Recovery Complex offers talks with an all-star cast of recyclers, tours and recycling activities to answer these questions and more from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday, November 15, 2014.

Ask experts about the recycling of electronics, household goods, and food scraps especially with the holidays around the corner.

• Challenge your recycling knowledge in StopWaste’s Ready, Set, Recycle contest to win a prize
• Tour the state-of-the-art facilities at Davis Street single stream recycling material recovery
• Create a holiday craft or ornament from recycled materials
• Discover zero-waste solutions for holiday celebrations
• Take your picture in a CNG garbage truck powered by garbage
• Engage your child in hands-on sustainability activities making paper, planting seeds and more
• Take the recycling pledge
• Receive a free bag of OMRI listed WM EarthCare™ compost made from 100 percent recycled food scraps and yard trimmings
• Recycle all the election campaign signs and mailers for a free bag of compost
• Visitors can also drop off hangers and electronics for free recycling as well as clothing, shoes, books, VHS tapes, CDs and DVDs for reuse.

Davis Street Resource Recovery Complex is located on 2615 Davis St. in San Leandro.

Every day in America, each person, on average, generates 4.5 pounds of trash, 1,642 pounds a year and more than 61,500 tons in a lifetime. In Alameda County where there average is a bit lower, 3.85 pounds per day, a 2008 study determined 60 percent of the trash was recyclable or compostable. Increasing recycling participation is the goal of America Recycles Day, a national event sponsored by Keep America Beautiful and celebrated annually on Nov. 15.
