From Academy Award winner, James Ivory, a Political Satire that Tackles Post-Election Chaos with Sharp New York Wit
CAN’T LET IT GO
A Timely Post-Election Comedy About Love, Politics, and the 2016 Fallout Starring Mario Cantone
Los Angeles, CA – From executive producer James Ivory (Call Me By Your Name) and writer/director Roy Szuper comes Can’t Let It Go, a sharp-witted, indie comedy capturing the political and personal chaos sparked by the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Starring Mario Cantone (Sex and the City), the film, wrapping up a successful run on the film festival circuit, kicks off theatrical screenings followed by cast and filmmaker Q&A in Marin County, CA.
Hailed as the “ultimate post-election hangover comedy,” the film was an official selection of the Morelia International Film Festival and won Best Feature Film at the Berlin Indie Film Festival. With biting humor and emotional insight, Can’t Let It Go explores the raw, absurd, and often hilarious impact of political polarization on relationships.
“New York dialogue, I mean, I marvel at it. As a writer myself and someone who has lived in New York most of my life, I could never write such dialogue as he has written,”said James Ivory, the Oscar-winning screenwriter and director.
Screening:
Friday, August 1, 2025,
6:30pm PDT at the historic Lark Theater,
549 Magnolia Ave., Larkspur, CA.
A post-screening Q&A with Cantone and Szuper will follow.
Synopsis
It’s November on the eve of our Presidential election and five New York couples debate different views from unexpected sources. Watch what happens in the lead-up to and the aftermath of Donald Trump’s surprise victory and how political differences humorously turn personal as an apolitical model, a Democratic dominatrix, and a Black gay Trump supporter—grapple with clashing ideologies, crumbling patience, and the limits of love and tolerance. As debates escalate, politics get personal.
“I woke up on November 9, 2016 with a post-election hangover,” says Szuper. “This film was my way of processing the madness—and making people laugh through it. With the threat of a second Trump term looming, the film feels more relevant than ever.”
Can’t Let It Go with support from The James Ivory Foundation was primarily self-funded. Szuper’s satirical yet heartfelt storytelling draws comparisons to indie classics like Clerks and Living in Oblivion.

About Roy Szuper Roy Szuper is an award-winning independent filmmaker whose work has screened at international festivals including Cannes and Vision du Réel. A first generation native New Yorker of Polish descent, Szuper initially started working in live music production where he found the topic for his first documentary “Concert Joe: A New York Story.” A fusion of comedy and music inspired by “This is Spinal Tap,” the film follows one man’s ridiculous quest to get into the Guinness Book of World Records for seeing the most concerts. The film was featured on MTV and VH-1. Szuper’s work consistently explores the intersection of culture, politics, and identity, often through a lens of humor and music. Drawing from personal experience and social movements, his films tackle serious subjects, racial profiling, political polarization, artistic rebellion with a satirical or subversive edge.
