Alejandro Murguía is the author of This War Called Love, Nine Stories, City Lights Books (winner of the American Book Award).

In non-fiction he has published The Medicine of Memory: A Mexican Clan in California, University of Texas Press.

He is a founding member and the first director of The Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts.

In 2013 City Lights Books published his new book Stray Poems.

His collection of short stories “The Other Barrio: New and Selected Stories” will be released this fall by Arte Público Press.

He was the Sixth San Francisco Poet Laureate and the first Latino to hold the post.

 

San Francisco poet Sarah Menefee, originally from Reno, Nevada, is a homeless rights activist and a founding member of such groups as Homes Not Jails, the League of Revolutionaries for a New America, and ‘First they came for the homeless.’

Her previous collections of poetry include I’m Not Thousandfurs, The Blood About the Heart, Human Star, In Your Fish Helmet, CEMENT, and Holy Eel (Lithic Press, 2024).

She has worked in hospitals, casinos, bars, day care centers, offices, and bookstores, and as an artist’s model; and has taught poetry in homeless shelters, half-way houses and at Occupy. Now retired, she is a fulltime gadfly and sitter in cafés.
