This award-winning film is the story of a secretive hedge fund that is plundering what is left of America’s newspapers, and the journalists who are fighting back.

Our film screening is a benefit for the San Francisco Public Press, a local nonprofit investigative newsroom.

The role of journalism in a democracy is fundamental — it’s the reason why freedom of the press is enshrined in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

So, it comes as no surprise when those seeking to take a hatchet to government and human rights put a target on journalists’ backs. The question is, who will protect local news if not journalists and those who value what we do?

Agenda

  • 5:30 PM – 6:00 PM – Doors Open — Come get your popcorn and grab a seat!
  • 6:00 PM – 7:45 PM – Film Starts
  • 8:00 PM – 9:30 PM – Join us post-screening for informal discussion across the street at Picaro.

The film features many local journalists and is produced by Bay Area filmmaker Rick Goldsmith, who has been nominated twice for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

“Bay Area Investigative reporter Julie Reynolds, Denver Post editorialist Chuck Plunkett and a handful of others, backed by the NewsGuild union, go toe-to-toe with the faceless ‘vulture capitalism’ firm, Alden Global Capital, in a battle to save and rebuild local journalism across America.

Who will control the future of America’s news ecosystem: Wall Street billionaires concerned only with profit, or those who see journalism as an essential public service and the lifeblood of our democracy?”
