ON HIATUS: $5 First Friday at Chabot Space & Science Center | Oakland Hills

Enjoy $5 admission to the Chabot Space & Science Center in the Oakland Hills every First Friday of the month from 6-10 pm.

$5 admission includes unlimited access to everything from laser and planetarium shows to Night Hikes and Star Stories. Regular admission is $18 for adults, so this is a super deal.

Every First Friday event will include a variety of fun evening activities for the whole family. Enjoy music, a bar, science demos, talks, telescopes, space missions and more.

Some activities have limited capacity and are first come, first served, so get there to sign up early. There is no pre-registration for First Fridays; just show up and join in on the fun.

Project Create Activity Space
Project Create is a place where families create together to spark their curiosity and love of making. Imaginations will be stimulated as our makers think of new ways to tinker with materials we see every day making them better, different, or new.

Water Organ with Artist Cere Davis
Time: 6-10pm
Location: Gruener Astronomy Hall
Cere Davis will bring her Water Organ to Chabot. This kinetic piece will explore how magnetized vessels create a chorus of sounds as they move through water in what she playfully calls, “meditative Koi pond behavior.” The idea began to materialize when Cere asked herself the intriguing question: “If you could build a system that behaved in a spatially chaotic way, what would it sound like?”

The Sound of Glass Workshop with Edward Schocker from Thingamajigs
Time: 6:45pm, 7:30pm, 8:30pm, and 9:15pm
Location: Hauben Room
Explore pitch and tone with water glasses! What sound do many glasses make when played together? Edward Schocker is a composer and performer who creates music with made/found materials and alternate tuning systems. Edward founded and directs The Music For People & Thingamajigs Festival, an annual event in the Bay Area devoted to unusual instruments and tunings.

Hearing at the Microscopic Level: Talk by Christopher Hoel – UC Berkeley
Time: 7:15pm
Location: Galileo Room
Hearing is an experience so ubiquitous that many of us take it for granted. Yet this seemingly simple process contains incredible complexity and wonderfully strange sights. From hammers and drums to hair cells and mysterious molecules, come and join us for a tour of hearing from the macroscopic to the microscopic.

DJ Dance Party
Time: 6 – 7pm & 8 – 10pm
Location: Mezzanine
Join the DJ for one giant dance party for mankind!

3 O’clock Rock Concert
Times: 7 – 8pm
Location: Mezzanine
3 O’clock Rock is an afterschool music program for kids and adults located in Downtown Oakland, California. They offer classes in analog recording, drums, guitar, bass, keyboards, cartooning, film production, and group and private lessons and they work with students to create their own bands. Scholarships are available and are sponsored by 924 Gilman Street Project (non-profit 5013c), and local businesses The Octopus Literary Salon, and Abura Ya Japanese Fried Chicken.

Telescope Makers Workshop
Times: 7 – 10pm
Location: Chemistry/Physics Lab
Open to all ages, the Telescope Makers Workshop is an all-volunteer group committed to helping people build their own telescopes. Drop in to see what they are up to!

Telescope Viewing
Times: 7:30 – 10:30pm
Location: Observatory Deck
Chabot’s giant, historic telescopes offer a unique way to experience the awe and wonder of the Universe. Check out celestial viewing day and night. Our observatory deck offers breathtaking views 1,500 feet above the Bay.

Our Minds on Machines: Talk by Camella Bontaites
Times: 8pm
Location: Megadome Theater
Humans push to mechanize the world around us, driving ourselves toward a fantastic future driven by a predictable, clockwork universe. Learn about how we see ourselves within this universe, and ponder how humanity’s self-image might need to adapt, in this presentation by Camie Bontaites of the Chabot Center’s OpenScienceLab and the ArmchairGalactic blog.

Today’s Future Sound- Interactive Beatmaking Workshop
Times: 8:15pm
Location: Megadome
Join Today’s Future Sound for a live interactive beatmaking workshop in the Megadome. This experience will exhibit the music and skills they teach students and community members across the San Francisco Bay Area and around the world. DJ’s and beatmakers will pull kids from the audience to program drums and play percussion instruments, with an instruction on sampling and remixing classic tracks.

Project Sound
Time: 9:15pm
Location: Planetarium
Experience the astral ambiance of electronic music paired with lush soundscape visualizations. Showcasing local sound artists, Project Sound is an immersive multi-sensory experience under the dome. NervePincher and friends will take you on a journey from the depths of the human mind to the far reaches of our universe.

BeanSprouts Cafe
Time: 6-9pm
As Chabot’s exclusive in-house café, Bean Sprouts can provide sandwiches, salads, and yummy treats.
