This is a rare chance to witness a classic in the Kabuki theater style, with the elaborate kimonos and painted faces and all. Part song & dance, part avant-garde theater, Kabuki has become a genre in itself.
If you are curious why Kabuki continues to entertain millions, this is a rare chance to see one of the classics.
It is a movie of a Japanese play but even though it’s in Japanese there’s English subtitles so you can follow along. It’s free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
The Courtesan Akoya — the famous love story of Akoya and Kagekiyo, a warrior of the Heike Clan. Akoya is captured by a comic villain and threatened if she does not reveal the whereabouts of her lover. In a highly emotional musical scene, Akoya manages to persuade her captors that she does not know where he is. Starring the greatest Kabuki actors of our time, including Bando Tamasaburo, Nakamura Kanzaburo, and Nakamura Baigyoku.
