Headstrong is a collection fifty-two profiles of women who made notable contributions to science, technology, engineering, and math, aka STEM fields.
Journalist Rachel Swaby presents an insightful and entertaining case that girls considering STEM fields aren’t lacking role models; it’s that the incredible accomplishments of female scientists are often left unmentioned. Inspiration struck when Swaby came across an obituary for Yvonne Brill, a brilliant, award-winning rocket scientist who invented a propulsion system to keep communications satellites in orbit, but whose obituary mentioned only her beef stroganoff, her husband, and her kids. The obituary—and consequent outcry in response—acted as a boiling point, highlighting that the stories told about women in science are largely unknown.
Swaby’s book gives these badass women the attention they deserve—with the aim of encouraging and inspiring the next generation of girls.
