The East Bay Regional Park District is celebrating its 5th annual UN International Day of Peace on Saturday, September 17, from 10:00 am to 1:30 pm at Lake Chabot Regional Park in Castro Valley. The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly. Two decades later, in 2001, the General Assembly unanimously voted to designate the day as a period of non-violence and cease-fire.
The program includes a lineup of eight dynamic Bay Area students who will present stirring messages on the UN 2022 theme “End racism. Build peace.” A featured youth speaker includes Zoe Dorado, youth poet laureate of Alameda County and a graduating senior from Castro Valley High School, who will recite one of her powerful poems.
There will be a gathering around the Peace Pole with a message presentation from the Muwekma Ohlone Indian Tribe and songs from students of the Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Center. The Peace Pole is a symbol of hope for the Bay Area community and for peace on Earth for the global family. The 12-foot-tall Peace Pole is inscribed with 31 languages, including Chochenyo, Nahuatl, American Sign Language, and Braille. More about the Lake Chabot Peace Pole.
Other program activities include messages from faith leaders, drumming and singing, and a one-hour Peace Walk alongside Lake Chabot. A light lunch of Korean food will be provided.
