Conceptual artist Spy Emerson creates gallery bound costumes, sets, and a story based on her experiences as a crewmember of the acclaimed Swimming Cities art projects. The play performance is a dark comedy about human exploration, inspired and grotesque. Following a successful float down the Hudson River, the Swimming Cities crew went to Slovenia; built art boats from junk, and navigated the Adriatic Sea to Venice, Italy. The culture-jammers spent three weeks living in the boats on the water en route to crash the Venice Biennale with their outsider art, an unrecognized genre by the institution. In the performance, Emerson plays two roles, herself as a disenchanted art marauder, and a cat that becomes the unwilling mascot of the motley crew. The cast includes Dottie Lux of Red Hots Burlesque, poetic luminary Dr. Hal Robins, and Gooby Herms, among other local talents.

The show at the Dark Room Theater is performed one night only, and then installed for exhibition in July’s art murmur at Warehouse 416 in Oakland. Happy Forever: The Life and Death of an Italian Cat is performed Saturday June 26th 7pm, 8pm, and 9pm.
