Sprouts Grocery Store Is Coming to SoMa by 2028

The new grocery store will take over the former Nordstrom Rack space on Ninth Street

San Francisco’s long-vacant former Nordstrom Rack space at 555 Ninth St. is finally getting a new tenant. Sprouts Farmers Market is expected to open a new grocery store there by 2028, bringing its fresh-food-focused supermarket to the edge of SoMa near the Mission.

The roughly 25,700-square-foot store will take over the shopping-center space that Nordstrom Rack abandoned in 2021.

And Sprouts won’t exactly be entering a grocery desert. A Trader Joe’s is just a couple of stores away, so shoppers in the area will soon have another option for produce, prepared foods, bulk items and the chain’s famously extensive selection of better-for-you snacks.

The new location is part of Sprouts’ ongoing California expansion. The Phoenix-based chain has added several Bay Area stores in recent years, including locations in San Jose, Hayward, Pittsburg and San Leandro. There’s no firm opening date yet, but if all goes according to plan, SoMa shoppers could be filling their carts at Sprouts by 2028.
