Muni Art 2017: SF’s 100 Rolling Art Galleries
Beginning the week of January 11, 2017, San Francisco will have 100 rolling art galleries courtesy of San Francisco Beautiful and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA). The art-filled buses will run from January to April, 2017.
For the second year, Muni Art, a collaboration between San Francisco Beautiful, the SFMTA and Supervisor London Breed, transforms ordinary buses into fine art galleries.
The 100 Muni Art buses showcase five artists’ interpretation of this year’s theme, “San Francisco Neighborhoods” and enriches the customer experience for the over 700,000 daily riders.
Out of 85 artists’ applications received, five were finally chosen by public vote on Neighborland.com to participate in Muni Art 2017 based on a criteria which included the quality of concept, expression of theme and diversity.
Four of the Muni Art winners, Lillian Shanahan, Luis Pinto, Todd Kurnat and Counterpoint Studio will each receive a $1,250 prize and the artist who received the most votes, Monica Tiulescu, will receive $2,000.
This program is entirely grant supported.
Created by San Francisco Beautiful in close collaboration with the SFMTA, the Muni Art Project, now in its second year, is funded by the generous support of members of San Francisco Beautiful, the SFMTA, the City and County of San Francisco’s Community Challenge Grant Program and sponsors Boston Properties, Flax Art and Design, DiveIn, and LikeMinded.
