On September 1, a Texas law went into effect that has now made all abortions after approximately six weeks into pregnancy effectively illegal. The law was appealed, then that appeal was thrown out of court, so the Texas law still stands. The Supreme Court has refused twice to block the Texas law.
On December 1, the Supreme Court could potentially nullify abortion protections nationwide by overturning the 1973 Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision that first legalized abortion nationwide. If this happens, abortion will no longer be a constitutionally protected right and the lower courts will have no power to block the Texas Abortion Ban.
There are approximately six million women of child-bearing age in Texas who are now deprived of the ability to safely, legally terminate a pregnancy. On Oct. 2, thousands of people took to the streets against this law and supporting women’s right to abortion.
What’s behind this law and other attacks on women’s rights to abortion?
What must be done to stop it?
