Beginning in 2003, the Garden Conservancy formed a partnership with the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy and the NPS to rehabilitate the Historic Gardens of Alcatraz. Join Shelagh Fritz (Project Manager of the Gardens), to learn about the preservation process of a cultural landscapes: through the planning stages, preparation of treatment plans and receiving approval, to implementing the plan. You will also become more familiar with heirloom plants on the island and stewardship of the gardens today.
Attendees of the tour will take the 8:20 am (free) staff boat to Alcatraz where the tour will start. The tour will be about two hours and visit all the historic garden locations of the island– including areas that are usually closed-off to island visitors.
Free but an RSVP is required.
