Learn how the Bay Area’s beloved prison and sightseeing destination has been portrayed on screen with author Jim Van Buskirk.

Alcatraz opened as a federal prison in 1934, kicking off its career in the movies. From Alcatraz Island to Birdman of Alcatraz, Hollywood has depicted life on The Rock. Point Blank was the first movie filmed there, in 1967, followed by popular favorites like The Enforcer, Escape from Alcatraz, The Rock and X-Men: The Last Stand.
