The 3rd Annual Oakland World Percussion Festival, Northern California’s largest one-day percussion, drum and dance event featuring free world percussion and dance performances including Brazilian Funk, West African Kuku, Japanese Taiko, Music from the Middle East, North India, Trinidad, Oakland, CA and more.

The festival features a giant drum circlefree drumming classes for kids and families, an International Marketplace featuring hand-made crafts, jewelry and art celebrating the drum, and world cuisine from India, Cuba, Thailand, Ethiopia, and Jamiaca.

2014 Schedule:

  • 9:30 – 10:30 am: Kids Drumming Class with Mika Scott
  • 11:30 am – 12 Noon: Maze Daiko – Japense Taiko Drumming Group with a funky twist (featuring Janet Koike and Tina Blaine)
  • Noon – 12:30 pm: Bataleras – Women’s Afro-Cuban Bata Drumming Group featuring Carolyn Brandy
  • 12:30 – 12:45 pm: Kamesha Fofana – West African Dance
  • 1 – 1:30 pm: Global FOURplay – Multi-instrumental Percussion Attack featuring Wade Peterson, Patricio Ben Isaacs and Robert Wallace
  • 1 – 1:45 pm: Kids Drumming Class with Mika Scott (Held in outside garden)
  • 1:30 – 2 pm: Balafon with Mohammed Kouyate and Craig Miller
  • 3 – 3:30 pm: Batala – Afro-Brazilian Percussion Ensemble
  • 3 – 3:45 pm: Kids Drumming Class with Mika Scott (Held in outside garden)
  • 4 – 5 pm: John Santos and David Flores: Afro-Latin Grooves & Concepts (donations are accepted)
  • 5:15 – 5:45 pm: Afoutayi Haitian Drum/Dance Ensemble
  • 6 – 6:30 pm: Closing Drum Circle facilitated by Jeni Swerdlow

There are also six hours of hands-on Percussion Workshops led by Oakland Drum All-Stars John Santos, Kiazi Malonga, Bobby Wallace, Edgardo Cambon, Ben Isaacs, Mary Ellen Donald, Jeff Pierre and others. Full Day Workshop Pass: $50
