Event Details

Enjoy refreshments and live jazz at the opening of “Mining the Collection,” inspired by Fred Wilson’s transformative “Mining the Museum” project at the Maryland Historical Society (1992), which involved presenting traditional museum collections in an alternative light, engendering new understandings.

The “Mining the Collection” series represents a joint venture between the Badè Museum of Biblical Archaeology and CARE’s Doug Adams Gallery, making use of the shared exhibition space. Working with Badè curators, a CARE artist explores the Museum’s Tell en-Nasbeh collection for inspiration. The artist creates artwork for exhibition in the Gallery, while the inspirational artifacts go on display in the Museum.

This year, guest artist Marienne Lettieri presents an artistic vision that emphasizes the continuity between past and present. Lettieri’s compelling and rich mixed media contructions focus on objects of domesticity and manual labor, demonstrating how these objects reflect spiritual and visual identies – “evidence of life.” Letteri’s choice of materials connects the modern world to the ancient world, reinforcing the notion of shared humanity over space and time.
