Event Details

Did you see the 2010 film “Howl” featuring James Franco as the inflamatory poet Allen Ginsberg (and Jon Hamm and Mary-Louise Parker too)?

This is a slide lecture by Eric Drooker, who designed the animation segments for the movie adaptation but also was responsible for “Howl: A Graphic Novel,” written by Allen Ginsberg. (Accompanied by the artist on a variety of musical instruments.)

In case you didn’t know: “Howl” is a poem written by Allen Ginsberg in 1955 and published as part of his 1956 collection of poetry titled Howl and Other Poems. The poem is considered to be one of the great works of the Beat Generation along with Jack Kerouac’s On the Road (1957), and William S. Burroughs’s Naked Lunch (1959). “Howl” was originally written as a performance piece, but it was later published by poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti of City Lights Books (the one in North Beach).
