The Asian Art Museum’s brand new exhibit, Changing and Unchanging Things: Noguchi and Hasegawa in Postwar Japan (Sept. 27 – Dec. 8, 2019) considers the consequential friendship of two artists in search of a new direction for modern art in the aftermath of World War II.
> Get Tickets – $25 for Special Exhibitions + General Admission
The exhibition traces the work, ideas and mutual influence of U.S.-born sculptor and designer Isamu Noguchi (1904–1988) and Japanese painter, theorist and teacher Saburo Hasegawa (1906–1957) who both reacted to the catastrophic effects of the war by questioning how art could balance tradition and modernity, Japanese culture and foreign influences, past and present.
“Truly beautiful and deeply meaningful” – The Wall Street Journal
“Intimate and Monumental.” – The Mercury News
