A global “Pay What You Can” movement led by Mexico City restaurant Masala y Maiz is expanding to the Bay Area for one day only on August 26, 2026. The idea is simple: participating restaurants serve their regular menus, and guests choose what they’re able to pay.
Four Bay Area restaurants are currently part of the lineup. In San Francisco, Reem’s and Sfizio are joining the initiative. In Oakland, Bombera and Understory will also open their doors under the flexible pricing model.
The participating chefs describe the effort as both a community experiment and a response to rising food costs and widening economic gaps. The goal is to make restaurant dining more accessible for a day, while also rethinking how hospitality can function in cities like San Francisco and Oakland.
