Bell Plastics’ Open House: Quirky Giant Americana Roadside Statues | Hayward

Only once a year, Bell Plastics opens their studio doors to the public. Much like Willy Wonka showing off his chocolate factory, people fly from all over the country for this rare event to see the enormous plastic wonders inside.

Since 1979, Bell Plastics in Hayward has been making amazing custom plastic fabrications behind their secretive doors. They are home to perhaps the largest collection of “Muffler Men,” giant fiberglass statues used for 1960s Americana marketing.

These giant statues, whether it be a Paul Bunyan or super sized cowboy, once would turn a common business such as a tire store into a landmark of a small town. Bay Area locals may recognize their Doggie Diner heads which they have on display in their outdoor “roadside attraction” museum.

Bell Plastics will be running their machines inside the shop to demonstrate how they make the creations and re-creations that they do.

“If you can dream it, we can make it” is the company motto. And as Bruce, the owner, likes to give back to his local community, there will be free hotdogs and more surprises for all who visit.

The street will be blocked off for those who wish to drive in with a vintage classic car. If you have a love for the statues at Children’s Fairyland in Oakland or vintage roadside attractions like Colossal Donuts, then this event is for you. Come celebrate Big Mike’s 50th Birthday* with them. Big Mike is a local muffler man now at Bell Plastics.
