Enjoy film and the stunning view from the top of the Hill in Bernal Heights Park. The gates will be open to pedestrians, joggers and our impromptu audience as Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema returns to set up on the northwest corner of Bernal Hill where Folsom Street meets Bernal Heights Boulevard. The “die hards” know to bring blankets, cushions, and low-backed lawn chairs to a have a comfortable view of the screen and city lights.

Charlie stated that he was “sitting on a good idea” in 1965, when he envisioned the unique instrument. This short documentary explores Charlie’s rock ‘n’ roll dream and the community that cherished him.

This documentary follows three very different families who find themselves together in a run-down housing complex in Oakland, CA. When the city condemns the building because of landlord negligence, the families form a multiethnic alliance to fight for their housing rights and preserve their community.

One family’s complex and emotional journey involving deportation. In 1992, Sam and Elida Mejia left Guatemala during a violent civil war and brought their one-year old son, Gilbert, to California. Two years ago, immigration agents stormed the Mejia’s house looking for someone who didn’t live there. Sam, Elida, and son Gilbert were all undocumented and became deeply entangled in the U.S. immigration system. With intimate access and striking imagery, Sin País explores the complexities of the Mejia’s new reality of a separated family–parents without their children, and children without their parents.

Stories from Sudanese women refugees who found temporary oasis at an Israeli women’s shelter. Told through first-person narratives from women and children, this short documentary gives voice to the refugees’ struggle for home and safety. Caught in complicated geographic, religious and political webs, the simplicity of their message becomes even more powerful: all they want is a place to call home.

An accounting of the black experience at Alcatraz Prison as told thru the eyes of Ellsworth “Bumpy Johnson, infamous Harlem gangster, Robert Lipscomb, counterfeiter turned prison activist, and William “Ty” Martin, the only black inmate to participate in a planned escape from Alcatraz. Some people believe that all criminals are treated equally, and many are deceived by the notion that all individuals receive equal treatment under the law.

About Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema: The 2010 season kicks off on September 2, Opening Night. Four more evenings of screenings, music and more follow on September 3 with a Film Crawl on Cortland Avenue, September 4, a Hilltop Screening on Bernal Heights Park and September 5, Closing Night at Precita Park. Then October 4 sees us back for a Season Finale at El Rio (must be 21 years of age).
