Event Details

“Locke, The Monte Carlo of California:” book talk with the authors of “Bitter Melon: Inside America’s Last Rural Chinese Town.”

Join CHSA Museum and authors Jeff Gillenkirk and James Motlow for a book talk on “Bitter Melon: Inside America’s Last Rural Chinese Town.” They will be presenting the 6th edition of “Bitter Melon” with updates on the story of Locke, California in honor of their town’s 100th anniversary.

“Bitter Melon” tells the largely forgotten story of the Chinese pioneers who came to California during the time of the Exclusion Act with vivid historical and contemporary photographs and oral histories. They settled on Locke, the last town in America that was built and inhabited exclusively by Chinese.
