For thousands of years, humans have been painting, tattooing, piercing, grooming, and sculpting their bodies. Take a closer look at how and why on the eve of San Francisco’s Body Art Expo.

Here are a few highlights from Body Art Nightlife on March 22, 2012:

• Tattoo artists from Moth and Dagger, Mom’s Body Shop, Let It Bleed and others will be on-hand for consultations.
• Adorn yourself at an airbrush tattoo or henna station, or create a new custom accessory at jewelry-making workshops by Accessorize with Toys and Raissa Bump Jewelry.
• See Native American jewelry and pottery from the Academy’s anthropology collection in the Evolving Traditions exhibit gallery.
• Study up on the history of male grooming and facial hair styles with renowned barber Shorty Maniace.
• And learn about the history of navigation through the South Pacific (home of the Tahitian word “tattau,” root of “tattoo”) in the planetarium.
