Event Details

Edvard Munch, the Norwegian artist currently the subject of a major exhibition at SFMOMA, was also an innovative and influential printmaker. His original etchings, engravings, lithographs, and woodcuts further explored the same themes as his paintings, such as love, pain, and death. Munch was a leading figure of the Symbolist movement, and his work strongly influenced the German Expressionists.

With an intensity few could sustain, Munch was devoted to formulating new technical and narrative languages of painting from his early twenties until the age of eighty. In this pursuit, he created a body of work that parses out and weaves back together the most exquisite and extremely emotional, psychological, and physical aspects of human experience.
