Why Is That Bridge Orange is a guidebook to San Francisco broken down into 86 short chapters that covers everything from topless dancing, the origins of the martini, and the invention of TV (which took place at 202 Green Street), to Patty Hearst’s hideout on Golden Gate Avenue, the mysterious color-coding of fire hydrants, and the only Frank Lloyd Wright building in the city.

Filled with colorful images, both modern and archival, it shows a San Francisco that has at different moments in its history defied, endured or sometimes even welcomed transition.

“Read this book immediately,” says Daniel Handler (aka Lemony Snicket, and Art Peterson’s once-upon-a-time AP English student), “so you will sound smart and knowledgeable when your out of town guests ask tough question about our glorious town.”
