Since settling in San Francisco in 1997, Canada-born trumpeter/composer Darren Johnston has collaborated and recorded with an extremely diverse cross-section of artists, including Meklit, Fred Frith, ROVA Sax Quartet, Rumen Shopov, Myra Melford, Ben Goldberg, and Matt Wilson. Johnston’s interests in jazz, experimental music, and songwriting as well as traditional music of the Balkans, Greece, Macedonia, Turkey, and the Arab world have coalesced into The Broken Shadows Family Band. This ensemble comprises an all-star cast of musicians from greatly diverging backgrounds: Western European to Arabic Classical music, Slavic choral music to Americana, and classic jazz to the sounds of Macedonia and beyond.
