Cal Day is an annual festival where the entire University throws open its doors and puts on hundreds of free lectures, performances, tours, concerts and more to showcase the campus, its students and the school’s programs. Cal Day 2010 takes place on April 17, 2010 from 9am to 4pm.
- Visit teaching labs in biology, chemistry, and cutting-edge technology
- Hear lectures by many of Berkeley’s renowned faculty
- Enjoy free admission to campus museums, including the Berkeley Art Museum and Lawrence Hall of Science
- Catch Golden Bear athletes in action in football, baseball, and tennis
- Attend dance and music performances

2010 Cal Day Highlights
Sustainability Walking Tour
2–3 pm | Dwinelle Plaza, meet on steps of Dwinelle Hall
This one-hour, student-led, walking tour highlights some of the campus’s sustainability efforts: installing semi-permeable pavers to reduce pollutants in storm-water runoff, creating re-use centers for materials exchange, and increasing natural light in buildings.
- DeCal Class: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Analysis
1–2 pm | 88 Dwinelle Hall
DeCal, which stands for Democratic Education at Cal, is the largest student-initiated education program in the country. This course explores the world of Harry Potter created by author J.K. Rowling, analyzing the many layers present within the seven-part series. - Big “C” Hike
2–3 pm | Bowles Hall, meet on front sidewalkJoin the UC Rally Committee for a hike up to the Big “C” on Charter Hill, a historic landmark and a central symbol of the spirit of the Berkeley campus. Learn about Cal history and traditions, while taking in the spectacular panoramic views of the campus and the San Francisco Bay
Bugs! Bugs! Bugs!
9 am–4 pm | 3003 Valley Life Sciences Building Check out the collection of beautiful bugs in the Essig Museum’s special display drawers, and see live arthropods in the courtyard! Face painting, insect crafts, bug hunts, and more on the south lawn, starting at 10 am.
Live Radio Astronomy Observations
10 am–4 pm | 501 Campbell Hall
See the skies with “radio eyes” using the Allen Telescope Array radio telescope! Learn how a radio telescope works, how radio astronomers “see” radio waves, and hear about the latest research on exploding stars, giant black holes, and ET. Bring your questions!
Alternative Fuel Vehicles Q&A
1–2 pm | McCone Hall plaza
New green-car technology is reaching the marketplace. Talk to one of Berkeley’s experts on alternative fuel vehicles, peek under the hood, and learn about the way research subjects are adapting to the new technologies. Transportation Sustainability Research Center staff
- Campanile Carillon Recitals
Noon–4 pm | Campanile (Sather Tower) - Hear 10-minute recitals on the hour, starting at noon. University Carillonist Jeff Davis, John Agraz, and students perform solo works, carillon duets, and Cal songs.
- Bug Doctor: Live Insects and Spiders!
9 am–4 pm | Wellman Hall, front lawn - The Bug Doctor and dream team of insect experts show you how to identify bugs. Bring your spiders, creepy crawlers, and bug-riddled plants. And there’s more: live termites, insect displays, crafts, bug bingo, and insect viewing through microscopes
- Cal Football Spring Practice
9–11 am | Memorial Stadium - Can’t wait for fall football? Get an insider’s look at what’s to come for the 2010 season. Admission is free. Coach Jeff Tedford
