Green Apple Books welcomes Christopher Corbett to our side room on February 23rd at 7 PM for a reading and discussion from his latest gripping historical narrative, The Poker Bride.
The Poker Bride recounts the tale of a young Chinese woman sold by her family into indentured prostitution in 1872. As a concubine in Idaho, she became the prize in a high-stakes poker game, and from then on was known as Polly Bemis, the winner’s legal, beloved wife in the remote wilderness of Idaho. Corbett wisely examines Bemis’ life in the context of Chinese immigration, gold country and its anti-Chinese prejudice, and life in the mining communities, revealing many complex and fascinating details of the period and the region.
Join us in welcoming Christopher Corbett for what’s sure to be a fascinating discussion of The Poker Bride and to pick up your own signed copy.
