Giant wood chipper in front of City Hall? Meet SF’s Xmas trees….
By - posted 12/25/2017 No Comment

SF is once again celebrating the holiday season by celebrating another time-honored San Francisco tradition – recycling.

City officials and Recology will gather in front of City Hall for the 31st Annual “Chipping of the Trees” where household Christmas trees will be fed through a giant wood-chipper and recycled into energy for biomass facilities.

Important: Do NOT bring your Xmas trees to this event – but leave them at your curb instead – The annual tradition is a reminder for San Francisco residents that Recology will be collecting and recycling Christmas trees from January 2-January 12, 2018.

How to get rid of your Christmas Tree

To get rid of your Christmas tree, please place clean, unflocked trees next to your bins on your regular service day between January 2-January 12, 2018.

Be sure to remove all tinsel, decorations, plastic bags, stands, and lights. If your tree measures more than 6 feet tall, please cut it in half before putting it on the curb.

Please note that a separate Recology truck will pick up trees and may not pick up Christmas trees at the same time as the compost bin. Please contact Recology if your tree is not picked up by the end of the day on your regular service day.

Collected Christmas trees will be chipped at Recology San Francisco’s transfer station and recycling center at 501 Tunnel Avenue. The wood chips will be used as biomass (boiler fuel) to generate electricity.
