A Newly Renovated 5-Block Park is Coming to Western Addition
Buchanan Mall is an underutilized city park that runs through a five-block section of San Francisco’s Western Addition, adjacent to the African-American Arts and Culture Center, the Ella Hill Hutch Community Center, and many apartment buildings.
San Francisco has worked with local residents to plan, design, and build new park enhancements aimed at making Buchanan Mall a safe, green, and well-used center for the neighborhood. The project would renovate the park to include edible gardens, interactive art installations, a gracious promenade, and children’s play areas honoring neighborhood heroes.

The Final Conceptual Design And Renderings include abundant green space, additional lighting throughout, and is woven together with a Memory Walk that highlights local stories.
Once the concept plan is complete, the project sponsors will select one block to fully design and build by 2021.
Key elements requested by the community have been included and each block emphasizes a unique theme of outdoor recreation:
- Block 1 – Active recreation (Eddy – Turk);
- Block 2 – All-ages play (Turk – Golden Gate);
- Block 3 – Basketball and BBQ (Golden Gate – McAllister);
- Block 4 – Art and entertainment (McAllister – Fulton);
- Block 5 – Garden and gather (Fulton – Grove).
The proposed bond for the November ballot includes funding for realizing the community’s vision for a reimagined Buchanan Street Mall as a part of the $200 million that would be invested in parks.
