Urban Art Takeover
If you find yourself taking a stroll down the Mission District from now until Aug. 17, you may come across your favorite advertising billboard defaced by a local mission artist.
That’s right, because of the ongoing gentrification of the Mission district, a public organization called Art City is coordinating with advertising companies to create an urban art takeover. Advertisements for Ed Hardy t-shirts will most likely be replaced by art pieces by Chris Johanson, Alicia McCarthy, and many other artists.
This initiative to cover the city with art instead of advertising will serve as a reminder of the artists, musicians, and other creative minds that are being pushed out of the Mission.
So next time you come across an abstract art piece on a billboard in the city, that may or may not make any sense to you whatsoever, be thankful that it’s probably replacing an ad for your future hair loss.
