16th St. BART Might Get a New $5M Elevator
Thanks to Mission Local for letting us know that the 16th Street BART elevator might finally get replaced after 50 years. And it will cost “only” $5 million.
Built in 1973, the current elevator at 16th Street was designed to only last for 30-40 years, so it’s already passed its expected lifetime. The elevator recently underwent maintenance in November, but since 50 years has passed, we’re really just buying time.
According to BART, the elevators ideally should be modernized every 20 years. (And the should probably never be peed in, but that’s a different story).
If the total of $5 million budget is approved, the project is set to start in June 2024 and hopefully completed by December of 2029
