Thanks to the San Francisco Chronicle and SF Gate for letting us know that San Francisco is gearing up for a potentially dazzling transformation of its Embarcadero Plaza, the underused gem on the city’s iconic waterfront.

Bold new plans aim to reimagine the entire area, formerly known as Justin Herman Plaza, including the notorious Vaillancourt Fountain, turning it from a stark concrete expanse into a lively green oasis. This project, crafted by design firm HOK in collaboration with BXP and the city, will blend Embarcadero Plaza, South Embarcadero, and Sue Bierman Park into a single, spectacular 5-acre park that’s twice the size of Union Square.

Picture this: meandering pathways, lush lawns, and vibrant spaces buzzing with activity. The new design promises a sculpture garden, food trucks, volleyball courts, and picnic spots, perfect for everything from lazy afternoons to bustling festivals. It’s all part of a grand plan to bring more people downtown and make it a place folks want to visit, not just need to.

The revamp doesn’t just add new features; it gives the existing plaza and fountain a complete makeover. And by “makeover” we mean torn down and start from scratch.

The old designs, more of a barrier than a draw created when there was a double-decker freeway blocking easy access to the Ferry Building and the waterfront, will be replaced with open spaces and breathtaking waterfront views. Imagine a bandshell stage, a dog run, quirky retail kiosks, and public art, creating a lively scene for locals and tourists alike.

This plan is in its infancy and the city will still have to figure out how funding will work.
