Bruce Lee Statue Coming to SF’s Chinatown?
Thanks to SF Gate for letting us know that a determined group, led by Bruce Lee memorabilia collector Jeff Chinn, is actively collaborating with the Bruce Lee Foundation to bring a butt-kicking statue of the martial arts legend to San Francisco’s Chinatown. Despite statues scattered globally, including in Hong Kong and Los Angeles, the city of Bruce Lee’s birth has yet to commemorate him in this way.
Chinn envisions placing the statue in Portsmouth Square, the heart of San Francisco’s Chinatown, as part of the park’s upcoming comprehensive renovation. Born in Chinatown, Bruce Lee’s return at 18 left an indelible mark, challenging the kung fu scene and later pioneering a pragmatic approach to martial arts in Oakland with James Lee.
Portsmouth Square’s historical and cultural significance makes it an ideal site for the proposed statue. While the San Francisco Arts Commission acknowledges informal discussions, no formal proposal has been submitted yet.
