Built in 1894, SF’s Japanese Tea Garden Stuns w/ Newly Revamped Pagoda Plaza
Historic Japanese Tea Garden Debuts Stunning Redesigned Pagoda Plaza
San Francisco’s Japanese Tea Garden, the oldest public Japanese garden in the United States, has unveiled its newly redesigned Pagoda Plaza.
Nestled in Golden Gate Park, this historic treasure, built in 1894, now boasts a stunning open space for cultural events and quiet contemplation, thanks to a meticulous redesign by award-winning Japanese garden designer Hoichi Kurisu.
A Plaza with Purpose
The redesigned Pagoda Plaza (which appears to have quietly reopened in mid-October, but was only officially announced this week) enhances the experience of visitors by creating a serene and functional gathering space. This area, which surrounds the iconic five-story pagoda, will host cultural events like taiko drumming, bonsai demonstrations, and more. Kurisu’s vision includes a blend of traditional Japanese aesthetics and modern functionality, featuring Tatsuyama stones donated by Matsushita Stonemason Co., Ltd. from Takasago, Japan—a material with a 1,700-year history of use in Japanese architecture.
Seven mature Japanese black pines, cultivated by Kurisu and his family, have also been planted, while new permeable pavement supports their growth. Behind the pagoda, a tranquil nook invites visitors to reflect among moss-covered landscapes and the towering cryptomeria grove.
Revitalized Pathways and Scenic Views
The redesign also removed fencing around the pagoda and added two new scenic paths. One leads from the main gate to a terrace overlooking the gift shop, the bronze Buddha statue, and the historic Hagiwara Gate. The other winds through the picturesque Sunken Garden, connecting the main gate with the Pagoda Plaza.
Free for San Francisco Residents
San Francisco residents can enjoy the Japanese Tea Garden for free every day with a valid ID. For others, admission is free from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The garden is open every day of the year, including Thanksgiving, making it the perfect spot to bring visiting family or simply enjoy a peaceful holiday stroll.
A Garden Steeped in History
The Japanese Tea Garden has enchanted visitors for over a century. Its pagoda, originally constructed in 1915 as part of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, was relocated to the garden in 1916. Following its complete restoration in 2022, the newly redesigned plaza now breathes new life into this historic centerpiece.
