Once a year, tens of thousands of people gather in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert to create Black Rock City, a temporary metropolis dedicated to community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance. In this crucible of creativity, all are welcome.

However, not this year. We expected this, but it’s official: Burning Man is officially cancelled for 2020. Tickets will be refunded. The main ticket sale had been postponed, but smaller sales had already occurred earlier in the year. However, Burning Man Project has requested that those who are able to, please consider gifting the value of the ticket or a portion thereof to the organization.

Will Burning Man carry on? Yes! They fully intend to be back next year, and this year, they’re bringing Burning Man to you. You’re welcome join their Virtual Black Rock City.

Burning Man made the following announcement:

After much listening, discussion, and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision not to build Black Rock City in 2020. Given the painful reality of COVID-19, one of the greatest global challenges of our lifetimes, we believe this is the right thing to do. Yes, we are heartbroken. We know you are too. In 2020 we need human connection and Immediacy more than ever. But public health and the well-being of our participants, staff, and neighbors in Nevada are our highest priorities.

We are, however, going to build Black Rock City in The Multiverse. That’s the theme for 2020 so we’re going to lean into it. Who’d have believed it would come true? We look forward to welcoming you to Virtual Black Rock City 2020. We’re not sure how it’s going to come out; it will likely be messy and awkward with mistakes. It will also likely be engaging, connective, and fun.

Your Invitation Awaits….

In the Multiverse, Black Rock City exists online, a virtual metropolis waiting for us to come Home. We can still build it together, and be together, and Burn together, only digitally instead of in the dust. On the virtual playa, there are no limits to who can join. So let’s do this together.

What Will This Look Like?

We invite you to imagine a new reality where 100,000 people converge to imagine, explore, celebrate, and take care of one another in these uncertain times. Where we can share our theme camps and art projects, kick off adventures with new friends, or get lost in a virtual dust storm out in Deep Playa. What do you want to bring?
