Castro Theatre’s Iconic Sign Lights Up Again

Castro Theatre’s 98 year old neon sign is shining again…for now

Many locals may have noticed that Castro Theatre’s iconic sign had been dark for many months. The historic theater had shuttered their doors and turned off their marquee and blade sign in mid-March.

However, thanks to SFGate for letting us know that the Castro’s signature sign is back, for now.

Thanks to a social media push spearheaded by Harry Breaux, volunteer ambassador to Castro Community Benefit District, the sign was illuminated once again on November 1.

Unfortunately, it may only be temporary. The 98 year old neon sign must be manually operated and closely watched. Castro Theatre noted that they don’t want to public to think that they have reopened yet, or for anyone to linger outside while the shelter-in-place orders are still in place.

Unfortunately the 1,400 seat theater will likely remain closed until 2021.
