Thanks to AP News for sharing the update that the nationwide mask requirement for public transit has been extended for 15 days in order for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to assess the recent uptick in COVID-19 cases due to the BA.2 Omicron subvariant.
The mask mandate for travel was set to expire on April 18, but the end date has been pushed to May 3 to allow time to study the new subvariant which is now responsible for the vast majority of cases in the country.
Locally, here in the Bay, this means masks will still be required on Muni, BART, Caltrain, cable cars, taxis, local buses, etc. through at least May 3.
