Should Muni Hike Fares? Vote Coming Next Week
Thanks to SFWeekly for letting us know that a Muni fare hike might be coming this summer.
Voting will be held on April 21, 2020. SFMTA, obviously hurting for funds with a massive drop in ridership, will vote on a budget proposal for fiscal years 2021-2022, which would increase Muni fares. According to SF Weekly, if the current proposal passes, it’s fare increases will likely go into effect by July.
The proposed fare increases:
- Single ride paid by Clipper card increases by 12%, from $2.50 to $2.80 (and to $2.90 in FY2022)
- Adult monthly Muni passes would increase by $5 per month.
Most of the supervisors are in agreement that given the financial challenges many city residents are facing during this pandemic, this is not a time to consider increases in fares. Supervisor Shamann Walton said, “Raising fares would almost be equal to a cruel and unusual punishment for some folks.”
Out of eleven supervisors, only one voted against the resolution. Rafael Mandelman pointed out that the fare increases allow new programs such as free rides to anyone under 19 years old and to anyone experiencing homelessness.
The resolution passed 10-1, and the budget vote will be held next week.
