Free SF Art Museum Opens in Historic Downtown Bank Building “The Cube”
In a bold move bridging San Francisco’s history and future, the Institute of Contemporary Art San Francisco (ICA SF) celebrated its grand opening from October 25-27, 2024, marking a major milestone for the city’s art scene and showcasing a model for revitalizing vacant urban spaces.
Known as The Cube, the 78,000-square-foot, five-story structure at Montgomery and California in SF’s financial district was once Bank of America’s flagship, but now stands as a space for avant-garde exhibitions, community programs, and creative exchange.
ICA SF moved from Dogpatch to The Cube – an arrangement that is rent-free, thanks to Vornado Realty Trust who have provided the museum a two-year license agreement to activate the building’s first floor and basement which expands the museum’s exhibition space from 11,000 square feet at its previous location to 26,000 square feet.

From Finance to Fine Art
As San Francisco’s downtown seeks ways to reimagine underutilized spaces, ICA SF’s rent-free setup represents a model that many view as revolutionary. With large numbers of offices sitting vacant post-pandemic, the potential of art to drive urban renewal in unused spaces takes on renewed importance. The Cube, with its striking five-floor atrium, exemplifies the power of architecture to host not only commerce but also creativity. ICA SF’s flexible exhibitions and free public access bring fresh energy to an area traditionally dominated by corporate entities, underscoring the role that art and culture can play in reactivating the city’s core.

ICA SF’s Vision for The Cube
At the heart of ICA SF’s mission is accessibility and experimentation. The institution offers free admission to all visitors, removing financial barriers to contemporary art and welcoming a broader audience. In a downtown still adapting to pandemic-induced shifts, ICA SF has introduced a destination for locals and visitors alike to engage with works by artists from around the world. With The Cube positioned at one of San Francisco’s most prominent intersections, ICA SF brings a space for dialogue, creativity, and community building to the Financial District, with exhibitions that respond to current cultural and social themes.
The grand staircase and cantilevered walkways within The Cube allow visitors to explore exhibitions in a unique architectural setting that juxtaposes the historic and the modern. ICA SF’s inaugural lineup showcases works such as The Poetics of Dimensions (“From plastic bags to shoelaces, the art in this California show is made entirely of trash” – The Guardian), curated by Larry Ossei-Mensah, and Maryam Yousif’s Riverbend, underscoring the institution’s commitment to promoting voices that challenge conventional narratives.
A New Model for Urban Revitalization?
By pioneering a rent-free museum in a revitalized former bank, ICA SF’s move exemplifies a potential future for art institutions and urban spaces in an era of fluctuating real estate demands. This unique setup may pave the way for similar initiatives in other cities seeking to revitalize their own downtown districts.
