NBC News reported that the iconic San Francisco City Lights bookstore may never reopen as the coronavirus takes its toll on small businesses.

Elaine Katzenberger, Publisher, and CEO of City Lights Booksellers & Publishers released the sad news via their website:

“A steady beacon, our store is there whenever we need a place to feel at home with our fellow humans, their ideas and aspirations, their curiosities and their wild dreams of a new beginning. At this time, we must humbly ask for your support.”

Here are some ways we can help:

  • Donate to and share our GoFundMe
  • Link back to and tag them on social media and re-share podcast episodes, event photos, and/or any memories of your connection to City Lights. They are on  Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Tumblr.

The money would go toward paying the full salaries and benefits of City Lights’ 20 employees. Please share this with your friends, family, colleagues, and community.

Katzenberger added, “With your advocacy and support, we know we can make this work. We want to be here on the other side of all this, and we are so much looking forward to welcoming everyone back to the bookstore. We’ll gather again among the books to tell the stories and share what we’ve learned with each other, and till then, We Are Waiting for the Rebirth of Wonder.”

Books are a repository for human knowledge and creativity, and a bookshop is like a storehouse for our collective soul. Though it’s dark now, City Lights is there, quietly waiting for us, and when the doors can be opened once more to welcome everyone back inside, the bookstore will become a home again, a place to gather and celebrate together. Until then, please keep the faith, read books, and know that we appreciate you so much.
